Labour Councillor hits out at 'false Dublin patriots' as City Council votes against hike in property tax
There were heated exchanges last night as Dublin City councillors voted 42-11 against a hike in the local property tax.
The tax has been reduced by a maximum of 15% since it was first introduced, but council management had recommended cutting that reduction to 10% to generate extra revenue.
Sinn Féin, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and People Before Profit voted against the hike, while the Labour Party and the Green Party voted in favour.
Labour Councillor Mary Freehill argued that keeping the status quo on the local property tax meant services would suffer.
She said: "I ask those false Dublin patriots who hide behind flags and placards, and who want a 15% reduction, to tell us what services you are prepared to cut?
"Because you have to take that responsibility, we will be losing €12m. Where do you want cuts in order to give this decrease?"
