National LGBT Federation calls for hate crime legislation

LGBT people are calling on the Government to introduce hate crime legislation.

The call is among the key findings of a new report looking at the burning issues amongst the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in Ireland.

Conducted by the National LGBT Federation, they say its the most comprehensive consultation ever conducted with the community across Ireland.

Vice Chair of the organisation Ciarán Ó hUltacháin says all minorities need the support hate crime legislation can provide.

"The key finding emerging from the research is that there is a definite need for hate crime legislation to protect all minorities not just LGBT people, but all minorities that could be victims of hate.

"After what happened in Orlando, it has shown him how important and how timely this is."
