Burton: Restoring Christmas bonus for welfare recipients a possibility

The Tánaiste said restoring the Christmas bonus for welfare recipients is "for discussion".

Joan Burton's comments come after new figures show the economy growing at its fastest rate in seven years.

The new figures led the Finance Minister to increase growth forecasts for the second time in a week - up to 4.5% for this year.

The Tánaiste and Social Protection Minister said the improving economic figures may allow her to look at restoring the Christmas bonus, but such decisions have yet to be made.

"I can't make any commitments at this point in time, but it is something … as all of these better figures emerge, there's no doubt there's a little bit of extra leeway. But we can't lose the run of ourselves."
