Irishman dies while on holiday in Maldives

An Irishman has died in the Maldives.

He is said to have passed away while on holiday there.

There are reports that he got into difficulty while swimming.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that they are aware of his death and are providing consular assistance to his family.

However, the Department of Foreign Affairs says citizens who need assistance can contact the Irish embassy in New Delhi.

In travel advice published on its website, the department says those travelling to the country should exercise a "high degree of caution".

It also says there is currently an outbreak of Zika virus there.

"Irish citizens travelling within the Maldives are advised to take extra care, follow the advice of local authorities and avoid any large gatherings, protests or rallies", it says.
