March against homelessness takes place in Dublin

Hundreds took to the streets of Dublin city earlier today to call for urgent action on the homeless crisis.

This afternoon's demonstration, which was organised by the trade unions IMPACT and Siptu, travelled from Custom House Quay to the GPO on O'Connell Street.

Recent figures show there are more than 2,000 children across the country who are registered as being homeless.

Social Democrats Co-Founder TD, Catherine Murphy, says the Government needs to take action to prevent the homeless and housing crisis from worsening.

Ms Murphy said: "There are things that you have to intervene in the market for, that are for the societal good and the right to housing is one of those.

"The very large number of children that are affected by this is a powder keg for those children and their familes and for society into the future. It's just no acceptable."
