A young male pedestrian was killed in a road accident in Co Carlow this morning.

Update - 3.30pm: Gardaí have launched an appeal for information after a man died in a road accident in the early hours of this morning.

The man in his early 40s was walking when he was struck by an SUV on the Castledermot Road in Tullow, the driver of the SUV was not injured in the accident.

The man's body has been taken to University Hospital Waterford where a post mortem examination will be carried out.

Inspector Audrey Dormer from Carlow Gardaí made this appeal: "We're appealing to anyone who was in the area between 2am and 4.30am or anyone with any information about the incident to contact Gardaí here in Carlow on 059-9136620."

Earlier: A young male pedestrian was killed in a road accident in Co Carlow this morning.

Gardaí are investigating the accident, which happened on the R725, Castledermot Road, Tullow, Co. Carlow at approximately 4.30am.

The man, believed to be aged in his late teens or early 20s, was fatally injured when he struck by a SUV. The driver of the SUV was not injured.

The Thomas Traynor Road to Rathbawn Lane is currently closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Diversions are in place and Gardaí are asking people to use alternative routes.
