Gardaí investigate Limerick gun attack thought to be part of 'local feud'

Gardai have appealed for information after a "callous and indiscriminate" gun attack at a house in Limerick writes David Raleigh.

Superintendent Derek Smart, Henry Street Garda Station, who is leading the investigation, said the family had a lucky escape after a "number of shots" were discharged into the house, located in the Glenbrook estate, Old Singland Road.

The shooting occurred around 12.30am, Tuesday morning.

Superintendent Smart said it was too early to say what the motive for the attack was - however garda sources said they believed the shooting may be linked to a "local feud".

"It doesn't take much these days for something like this to happen unfortunately. Luckily no one was injured, but when these type of incidents go wrong anything can happen," the source added.

Shots were fired through the front window and front door of the house, however gardai said that no one was injured.

The senior garda said fragments of spent ammunition, found at the scene, should help gardai determine the type of gun used.

"Evidence was recovered at the scene last night, with regards to the type of firearm used, has been sent to our forensic unit in Dublin for analysis," he added.

Appealing for anyone who saw any vehicles traveling in a suspicious manner, in the Bloodmill Road area, around midnight, Supt Smart added: "We are taking this very seriously."

Also appealing for witnesses, Sergeant Justin McCarthy, Henry Street garda station, said: "This was a callous and indiscriminate act, putting lives at risk. Fortunately no one was injured."

"An Incident Room has been set up at Henry Street Garda Station. Gardai are appealing for witnesses to this incident or anyone that may have see any suspicious activity to contact them at Henry Street," Sgt McCarthy added.

House to house enquiries were taken place this Tuesday, and damage caused to the home was examined by a local garda forensics unit.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061-212400 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111
