Councillors vote to revoke award from Aung San Suu Kyi

Dublin City councillors have voted by an overwhelming majority to revoke the Freedom of the City awarded to Aung San Suu Kyi.

The vote at this evening's meeting was passed by a margin of 49 to two, with one abstention.

The move is in response to the Nobel Laureate's handling of the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar.

The councillors also passed a motion to take Bob Geldof off the roll of honour, after he gave back his award in protest.

Councillor Mannix Flynn told the meeting he supported the move.

“We are taking Aung San Suu Kyi off because she’s silent and Bob Geldof is coming off because he’s not silent,” said Flynn.

“He’s using his position in terms of the scroll and the freedom of the city to bring more light into the particular process. Equally U2 are using that position (in the same way).”
