Irish MEPs sign letter demanding Draghi appears before Banking Inquiry
Irish MEPs have all signed a joint letter demanding that the ECB President Mario Draghi appear before the Banking Inquiry.
The letter, which was co-ordinated by Independent MEP Marian Harkin, was drafted in response to Mr Draghi’s contention that he is answerable to the European Parliament and not to the Parliaments of Member States.
Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy says Mr Draghi has a moral duty to appear before the inquiry.
He said: "The ECB basically bullied Ireland into accepting a bailout, accepting the Troika and burdening the Irish people with billions of euro of debt that wasn't of their making.
"Now it appears that our Government is allowing the ECB to dictate the terms of whether or not they will participate in the Banking Inquiry.
"The ECB have a moral obligation to attend the Banking Inquiry to outline their own role in Ireland's banking crisis."
