Cork prison shuts its doors

The doors have been closed on the old Cork Prison for the last time today.

All 163 prisoners have been transferred to a new state of the art jail in Co Cork.

It means they no longer have to slop out their cells.

The new prison provides approximately 275 spaces for prisoners based on double cell occupancy and all units have toilet and shower facilities.

The transfer of the prisoners took six hours to complete and was supervised by Gardaí earlier.
