Government accused of plan to scapegoat Irish Water management

Fianna Fáil says sacking the head of Irish Water will do nothing to resolve the problems at the company.

It is believed that the prospect of replacing John Tierney, or some directors at Irish Water, is being discussed at Cabinet today.

Fianna Fáil is calling for a vote in the Dáil tomorrow night, looking for water charges to be suspended until a major review is carried out.

Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen has accused the Government of using Mr Tierney as a scapegoat for Irish Water's problems.

"They want to throw somebody under the bus again, having done the same to the likes of [former Garda] Commissioner Callinan, having done the same when there's furore in their own political party that was Fine Gael, they wanted to throw some officials from headquarters under the bus," he said.

"And now they think that the way in which this can be resolved and the way in which people will move on is by throwing John Tierney or any of his management or his board under the bus.

"I won't buy it, the people won't buy it, and the Dáil shouldn't buy it tonight."
