Cork bids to become European Green city

Cork will bid to be named the European Green Capital for 2017, when a submission is completed by the end of the month.

The final decision to submit a bid for the prestigious European accolade was made slightly over a month ago, it is understood.

If the bid was to be succesful, it would mean Cork would be recognised as the 'green capital' of Europe; something that could act as a significant incentive to attracting business, according to Cork Energy chief executive, Donal Kissane.

"We've been working on it for some time. It's been around for a while since the [Global Cork Economic Forum] of last year to do something along the lines of the City of Culture in the energy sector," said Mr Kissane.

Bristol is set to assume the title of European Green Capital for 2017, joining the likes of Copenhagen and Nantes as recent winners.
