ASTI chief gets death threat which included 'despicable references' to his kids

The General Secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland has condemned the treatment of the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn and claims he has been bullied by members of his own organisation.

Minister Quinn was repeatedly heckled, jeered, booed and laughed at during his speech at the ASTI conference in Co Wexford yesterday.

However ASTI head, Pat King, has said that he got a death threat from a member of the ASTI.

The General Secretary of the ASTI says he received a death threat on a website used by members of the union.

He says there were also despicable references made about his children and grandchildren in the comments and he reported the bullying and abuse to the ASTI's Central Executive Council in January.

Mr King says yesterday's actions at the ASTI conference, by what he says was a minority of the delegates, were "disrespectful" and can't be condoned.

He used his address to the ASTI conference this morning to hit out at what he says amounted to abuse.
