GSOC to investigate after man dies near Spawell Roundabout

A man who reportedly shot himself in the head in Dublin yesterday has died in hospital.

He has been named as 31-year-old Anthony John Ward from Crumlin.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Gardaí investigating an allegation that a woman was falsely imprisoned were observing a car being driven by a man, who they believed was armed.

The driver lost control of the car, crashing near the Spawell Roundabout on the N81 near Templeogue.

It is understood that he then got out of the car and shot himself.

An ambulance was called and the man was taken to Tallaght Hospital. He died shortly after midday today.

A Garda Ombudsman investigation is now underway to establish the exact circumstances of his death.

The Garda Ombudsman is responsible, under Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005, for ensuring an independent investigation takes place where death or serious harm has occurred to a person who has been in contact with a garda.

A Garda Ombudsman investigator has attended the scene of an incident.
