Country missed chance to remove 'constitutional barring order' in Presidential Age vote

A charity that works with young people says it is extremely disappointed that Ireland voted against lowering the age of Presidential candidates.

Future Voices says it was a missed opportunity to scrap a negative stereotype about an entire group of people.

All 43 constituencies said No to the proposal and the group says that was down to a lack of engagement on the issue by the Government.

CEO Mairead Healy says it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

She said: "I think it was a very important issue, it was about equality. It was about removing an entire constitutional barring order that prevents every single person in the country under the age of 35 applying for the presidency.

"If you just look at that, that is actually putting a stereotype on all people in the whole country under the age of 35.

"It is still being maintained now because there was no engagement on the issue."
