Efforts resume to bring bodies of two Meath pilots down from mountains

Investigations are continuing into the air crash in Co Wexford in which two men were killed.

The two men - one in his early 50s and the other in his 60s - were both experienced pilots from Co Meath.

The bodies remained at the scene overnight, with gardaí and the Coast Guard coordinating recovery efforts.

The light aircraft had taken off from Athboy Aerodrome in Co Meath and was heading towards Wexford in good weather conditions.

The alarm was raised by a hillwalker, who alerted emergency services after seeing the plane come down at Blackstairs Commons near Mount Leinster on the Carlow/Wexford border.

Gardaí, mountain rescue personnel, and air accident investigators were then airlifted to the scene by the Waterford Coast Guard helicopter.

There were no reports of a distress signal. The two men onboard were killed in the crash.

The area of the mountain where the plane crashed is not accessible by road or pathway, and so emergency teams had to be landed on the mountain by the Rescue 117 helicopter.

Their bodies remained at the mountainous and remote scene overnight. Gardaí have been co-ordinating the recovery operation with South East Mountain Rescue and the Coast Guard helicopter.
