Arts Minister defends decision to allow Star Wars filming on Sceilig Mhichíl

Arts Minister Heather Humphreys said today that she only allowed the new Star Wars film to be shot on Sceilig Mhichíl after getting producers to scale down the environmental impact on the island.

Heather Humphreys says Lucasfilm agreed to reduce helicopter traffic by 90% before she allowed the filming.

She also said that all filming at the site was supervised by parks and wildlife staff, whose wages were covered by the filming company.

In response to a written Dáil question, she said that she is happy that the filming will not have any lasting impact on the island, which is a designated World Heritage Site.
