By Sean Ryan

Two people are in a critical condition at University Hospital Galway following a serious accident on the N59 between Clifden and Oughterard this morning.

The road traffic collision occurred shortly before 7am on the Oughterard side of Maam Cross and is understood to have involved two vehicles.

Emergency services remain at the scene and the road is now closed as Gardai conduct a technical examination.

It is expected the section of the N59 between Clifden and Oughterard could remain closed until this evening.

Traffic is being diverted from Oughterard to Seanapheasteen, and Gardai are warning motorists to expect delays.
