Two prison officers are awaiting test results after they were sprayed with blood today.

The incident happened when they were bringing a prisoner from Mountjoy to the Mater Hospital for treatment.

It is understood that they caught a person trying to pass contraband to the prisoner.

When they tried to intercept the parcel, the IV line was dislodged and sprayed the officers with blood.

The prisoner is a known drug addict and was jailed in 2014 after he violently robbed a taxi driver.

The officers have been placed off duty.
