Transport Minister says sector 'needs radical ideas'

The Transport Minister says he wants to see radical ideas to turn the sector ‘upside down’.

More than 70 industry representatives are meeting at Dublin’s Mansion House for a round-table discussion on the issue.

Shane Ross says it is important everyone has their say.

"I want to hear people who have got seriously different ideas for this sector," said Mr Ross.

"Transport needs radical ideas."

One of the country’s largest transport unions says strike action in the coming months is a real possibility.

The NBRU has accused the NTA and the Department of privatising public transport services and siphoning millions of euro of taxpayers’ money to large multinationals.

The union’s General Secretary Dermot O’Leary said: "We have a concern that there is a new operator coming in to the Dublin market, for example, where the workers there are starting off on a miserly €32,000 a year.

"Those workers over a period of time will demand parity with the state-owned bus workers so that's another potential flashpoint industrial dispute-wise."
