Orla Hurley, originally from Cork and now living near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy since 1990, said that the Irish community stands ready to help.

Orla’s husband David Walker, from Blackrock in Dublin, is an experienced climber, and was also climbing Mont Blanc last Sunday when Irishmen Colm Ennis and Peter Britton

David’s Italian climbing partner, 45-year-old Francesco D'Alberti also died on Monte Rosa on the Sunday morning.

“Irish people here would be more than happy to help,” she said. “In Italy, not many people speak English, and there could be legal stuff to do.

“We could help them talk to police. My husband is part of the climbing community here and we both speak fluent Italian.”

“I know the consulate is providing assistance, but we’re willing to help too.

Orla said that recent weather in the area has created unfavourable conditions for climbers.

“The weather has been very bad, unseasonably bad, for the last month,” she said.

“It’s high season for climbers in July, where there are normally very good conditions.

“They were all very experienced climbers and not people just taking a chance. They’ve been incredibly unlucky.”
