The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors wants to "get back to policing" now that a new Commissioner has been appointed.

Noirin O'Sullivan was confirmed as Martin Callinan's successor yesterday - months after she took up the role on an interim basis.

It comes in the wake of a number of controversies in the force, including the penalty points row and a report which highlighted the under-recording of crime.

Secretary General with the AGSI John Redmond has welcomed news of Noirin O'Sullivan's appointment, and said it's time to move on to the real work.

"The important thing is that the job is done now, that we can get back to policing," he said, "that we can concentrate on taking the positives and working on the reports that have come out in the last while, and that we start to provide, again, the professional police service that's required."
