A new survey indicates that nearly one in three of us will take more foreign holidays in 2016, compared to five years ago.

The poll of more than 5,000 people found one in three will travel more this year because they have more disposable income.

One in four of those surveyed will go abroad because they say it's cheaper to holiday overseas.

Those aged 17 and 24 are most likely to take more foreign holidays, according to the survey by AA travel insurance.

Meanwhile, Irish tourism is expecting a bumper year.

A Fáilte Ireland survey has found that nearly three quarters of tourism businesses had improved sales in the first three months of the year, and 63% of firms expected increased overall business in 2016.

Alex Connolly of Fáilte Ireland said a number of factors were behind the strong first quarter figures.

"We had a very successful St Patrick's festival and an earlier Easter, which made the first quarter busier," he said, "but we also had strong growth from the US and UK."
