Nearby St Mary’s Secondary School 4th year students who were holding a sleepover with their Deputy Principal were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

County councillor Ted Lucey said: “It has been a very tough few weeks for Macroom. The Briery Gap is the heartbeat of the town and is loved and used by so many people.

"Fair play to the fire service who showed great courage and determination once again this morning. It is a disaster at the moment but the community in Macroom is a wonderful one to rally around people in times of tragedy and crisis.

"We will bounce back from this and offer all our support.”
