Six politicians have appeared in the Dáil today wearing Repeal the 8th jumpers
Queries have been raised about the Dail's dress code after six TDs wore sweaters with a slogan calling for repeal of the 8th Amendment.
The TDs from the Anti-Austerity Alliance-People Before Profit wore the jumpers during the first Leaders' Questions of the new term.
Fine Gael's Ciaran Cannon suggested the jumpers might break the Dail dress code - claims dismissed by the Ceann Comhairle.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny defended plans for a citizens' assembly on the issue, saying all sides of the debate need to be heard.
But triple-A TD Ruth Coppinger - who was wearing one of the jumpers - says only the full removal of the 8th Amendment will do.
The Taoiseach has defended the Citizens' Convention on abortion - saying it's "not a black and white issue".
Enda Kenny was responding to criticism from pro-choice TDs - six of whom wore jumpers bearing the 'REPEAL' slogan in the Dáil chamber.
The convention is due to hold its first meetings on the subject of repealing the 8th amendment in three weeks' time.
Deputy Ruth Coppinger told the Taoiseach that protestors last Saturday want the clause removed, not simply amended again.
But the Taoiseach says it is important to sound out the issue further.
The AA-PBP have made a strong statement this morning by appearing in the Dáil wearing black ‘Repeal’ sweatshirts.
The shirts are part of the protest movement looking for a referendum to appeal the 8th Amendment.
The support comes after a Repeal the 8th protest that took place in Dublin over the weekend with estimates of 20-25,000 people in attendance.
