'Fianna Fáil did 70% of the hard lifting to get the economy back on track' says TD

A Fianna Fáil TD claims that they did 70% of the hard lifting to get the economy back on track.

Brendan Smith's comments come five years to the day since the Fianna Fáil government signed the joint EU - IMF bailout deal.

Jobs Minister Richard Bruton has said Fianna Fáil handed over Ireland's economic sovereignty to the troika - and that they are still not fit for government.

However Deputy Smith has said that it was their policies that the current government put in place to get the country back on track.

“We made 70% of the adjustments in public finances and taxation that had to be done prior to Mr Bruton coming to office.

“They overall completed the overall program but they made some decisions that we wouldn’t agree with in reaching the desired budgetary adjustments but they carried out by and large the overall adjustment, that the Fine Fáil party and Government agreed and did 70% of the hard lifting on as well.”
