Cork man killed on Italy mountain; fourth climbing death this week
A 40-year-old Cork man has died in a climbing incident in Italy.
The man, who is understood to have been a member of a well-known Cork business family, was climbing with a group of 11 friends when the accident happened.
He was killed yesterday. It is understood he suffered head and neck injuries.
The man's family has been notified and is being assisted by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Italian officials have declined to release his name until all relatives have been informed.
It is the fourth climbing death this week involving Irish men.
Previously this week, Colm Ennis (aged 37) from Waterford and Peter Britton (aged 55) from south Tipperary, died on Mont Blanc in France.
And last Saturday, Francis McKeon, (aged 56) , a civil servant from Co Cavan, had been climbing the Twelve Bens mountain range in Muckanagh, Co Galway when he died in a fall.
