A syndicate from the Midlands collected a cheque for more than €5.9m from Lotto Headquarters in Dublin today.

The delighted group, who wish to remain private, won the €5,900,958 fortune in the Lotto draw on Saturday, May 9 after buying a Lotto ticket in Tesco, Ashe Road, Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

The lucky seven will split the winnings equally, each pocketing a cool €842,994.

As they celebrated the momentous occasion today in the National Lottery’s Winners’ Room, with a few glasses of champagne, a spokesperson for the lucky group said: "We’ve played the same numbers since Lotto began in 1988 and the most we’d won before was €56.

"I knew those numbers would do us good one day!"

The winning numbers for the draw were 2, 5, 13, 17, 32 and 34.

“When I checked the ticket, I couldn’t believe it. It still doesn’t feel real for us. We’re delighted,” he smiled.

May was a lucky month for Mullingar as a second major Lotto prize winning ticket was sold in town last month.

A Co Westmeath couple won the Lotto Plus 2 top prize of €250,000 on Wednesday May 20 after buying their ticket in Rochforts on Dominick Street.

Mullingar has a lucky Lotto history in general. A jackpot prize of €10,651,567 was won by Carol Loran and Kevin Geoghegan in May 2013.

They bought their ticket the very same store in which today’s winners bought their winning ticket.

Carol and Kevin are Westmeath’s biggest Lotto jackpot winners to date.

Since Lotto began in 1988, there have been 24 Lotto jackpot winners in the county of Westmeath, with over €33m in jackpot prizes being won in the county in total.

Tomorrow night’s Lotto jackpot is an estimated €5m.
