ASTI: If schools shut down, 'the Govt is shutting them down over €6 per teacher per week'

Talks aimed at averting tomorrow's strike by ASTI secondary school teachers resume this morning in Dublin.

The union is meeting with officials from the Department of Education.

The planned strike is the first of seven days, and is set to close hundreds of schools nationwide.

It is also feared many schools will not be able to re-open after the mid-term break, when ASTI members plan to withdraw from supervision and substitution duties.

ASTI Vice president Ger Curtin, says it is a problem of the Government's making.

He said: "If the schools shut down, it's the Government are shutting them down and they are shutting them down over €6 per teacher, per week.

"Our members, if they had paid that €6 a week, our members would have continued on working, there was never a question of us not doing the supervision and substitution.

"The only reason we are not doing it, is because we are not getting paid for it."
