Gardaí carry out searches as part of Roscrea drugs crackdown

Two people were arrested in Roscrea, Co Tipperary this morning as part of a garda crackdown on organised crime and drugs in the town.

Officers from Roscrea, Nenagh, Birr assited by the Regional Support Unit and the Garda Dog Unit carried out five planned raids in the town.

"As part of on-going intelligence-led operations targeting Organised Crime and the sale and supply of controlled drugs in the Roscrea area gardai have conducted a number of searches," a garda statement said.

The two arrested men were detained for obstruction during the course of the searches and brought to Roscrea Garda Station. They have both since been released.

The Garda operation follows public disquiet in the town over what locals have described as a rise in incidences of drug use.

Over 1,000 people attended a public meeting in the town earlier this week where gardaí, politicians and sports groups were urged to work together against the problem.

It follows a mass protest last week during which hundreds of people took to the streets demanding action following a number of suicides.

Gardai in north Tipperary are urging Roscrea residents not to act as vigilantes in tackling problems surrounding local drug dealing and anti-social behaviour.
