Almost 1,500 hoverboards have been seized at Dublin Port.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission prevented them being imported due to what it says are "significant safety concerns".
The Commission says it became aware of reports of unsafe hoverboards across Europe and launched an investigation into the safety of the products.
When the 1,400 hoverboards arrived, they were checked and safety concerns were identified relating to their charger or battery pack potentially overheating.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission is advising anyone buying a hoverboard to ensure it has a genuine CE mark and to get them from a reputable retailer.
