Booster jabs

The rollout of third doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to vulnerable groups will begin next week.

The HSE's chief executive Paul Reid said those eligible for a third vaccine dose can make appointments from Wednesday, with the first jabs to be given next Friday.

Mr Reid added the campaign will take five to six weeks and the HSE will contact those considered to be “high risk” to make appointments.

UN General Assembly

Taoiseach Micheál Martin will address a meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York later today.

In his speech, Mr Martin is expected to focus on the pandemic, climate change and peacekeeping.

On Thursday, the Taoiseach presided over a debate on climate and security at the UN headquarters, the first time an Irish Taoiseach has chaired such a meeting.

Wexford crash

Four people were hospitalised after a light aircraft crash-landed on a beach in Co Wexford on Thursday afternoon.

Two men, aged in their 20s and 50s, and two women, both aged in their 30s, are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, with air accident investigators examining the incident.

The aircraft had been conducting a marine wildlife survey just off the coast when it ran into difficulty.

Lyra McKee murder

Two men arrested in connection with the murder of journalist Lyra McKee are due to appeal in court later today.

Ms McKee was shot dead in Derry in April 2019 as she observed rioting in the Creggan area of the city.

Two further men also charged in connection with the 29-year-old's death are due to appear in court in October.

Make Way Day

Road and footpath users are being urged to consider the impact of their actions on those with disabilities and reduced mobility for Make Way Day '21.

Gardaí are supporting the Disability Federation of Ireland's initiative, clamping down on drivers parking on footpaths and in designated disabled parking bays without a proper permit under Operation Enable.

President Michael D Higgins has also voiced his support for the campaign, saying there "must be an awareness that actions without sufficient care may have unintended repercussions for others".
