Farmers should have extra time to pay tax bills, says IFA

The IFA wants the Government to give farmers more time to pay their tax bills.

The Irish Farmers Association will later reveal its Budget submission for next year.

The group says farmers' incomes is its top priority, in a year which has seen dairy farmers' earnings affected by the abolition of milk quotas.

IFA president Joe Healy said that simple tax reforms could make a huge difference to their members.

"What we're arguing for is just to improve on that is that in a very tough year, like the year that we're in, that they would be able to pay the tax on the estimate figure for the year that we're in and have the next three years to pay whatever extra tax has to be paid," he said.

"So it's not a tax avoidance or anything, the same amount of tax would be paid over probably an extra few years."
