Update 3.35pm:The two women killed in a crash in Co. Galway have been named locally.

Gardaí in Ballinasloe are still investigating the crash in which Maureen Dooley and Deirdre Kilmartin died last night.

It is being reported that they both were married with children, were in their 50s and were well known in the Galway town.

Ms Dooley is believed to have been a school teacher who taught maths at Marist College in Athlone, and is survived by her husband and three children.

Ms Kilmartin is said to have worked in a local veterinary surgery and had two children with her husband.

Investigations are continuing after two women were killed in Co Galway yesterday.

Two cars crashed on Station Road in Ballinasloe at around 5.40 yesterday evening.

The victims in their 50s were struck by one of the cars involved in the collision.

Local councillor, Dermot Connolly told Galway Bay Fm that the community is shocked.

He said:

It is just one of those sad occurrences that you hope wouldn't visit your community but it is in ours this morning and it is devastating.

Earlier: Gardaí appealing for witnesses following Galway crash in which two women were killed

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a crash in Co Galway that has claimed the lives of two women.

The women were walking near Ballinasloe train station when they were hit by a car involved in a collision.

The two-vehicle collision occurred on the Station Road at around 5:40pm yesterday.

Two female pedestrians, who were both in their 50s, were struck by a car which had collided with a second car.

They were pronounced dead at the scene and their bodies were taken to Portiuncula Hospital.

The road was closed while investigators carried out an examination.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Gardaí.
