Shatter 'disappointed' at direction of migration reform under Fitzgerald
Former Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said he is disappointed that work he started on migrants rights has not been continued by his successor Frances Fitzgerald.
Mr Shatter was speaking at an event organised by the Migrant Rights Centre, which is calling on the Government to regularise undocumented migrants.
It is estimated there are up to 26,000 undocumented migrants in Ireland.
Deputy Shatter said his Bill on migrants was held up for 18 months, and that he came under pressure to "fragment" the legislation and deal only with the asylum issue.
"I'm disappointed that it seems my successor is now going along with the proposal to produce a shorter bill which will not deal with overall immigration reforms," he said.
