Garda industrial action to go ahead on Friday

Garda Sergeants and Inspectors say their industrial action planned for Friday will go ahead.

The AGSI say "no progress" has been made in talks about Garda pay with the Department of Justice.

From Friday morning, AGSI members will refuse to use the PULSE IT system for 24 hours, they'll also refuse to carry out admin duties.

More talks are scheduled for tomorrow.

And Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has told the Dáil she hopes a compromise can be reached: "The reality of any negotiations is that both sides do not get everything they want but we must continue in the coming days to work with great intensity, which we will, to map a way forward."

The Tánaiste has again insisted the Lansdowne Road pay deal cannot be abandoned in efforts to avoid a Garda strike.

She has warned that the government must honour its pay agreement to other public servants, as talks with Garda associations continue.

In the Dáil tonight she has insisted that she has a great admiration for the work the Gardaí do.

But she says there will be major disruptions if the strike action goes ahead on Thursday week: “Whether you’re talking about cash-in-transit, cash escorts.

“When you’re talking about preventing burglaries, gathering intelligence, dealing with fatal road traffic accidents, the whole range of work that gardaí do, I mean this is a hugely significant issue if that labour was to be withdrawn with huge impact in this country.
