Bailey concludes evidence as his partner takes the stand

Ian Bailey's evidence has concluded after nine days in the witness box.

The former journalist with an address in Schull, Co Cork, is suing the State and Garda Commissioner claiming he was wrongfully arrested on suspicion of murdering Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996.

Earlier, he fought back tears in court describing how his alcohol problem led to his long-term partner Jules Thomas leaving him for several months in 2001.

The journalist has previously given evidence that he feels "eternal shame" he was involved in domestic violence against Ms Thomas in 1996 and again in 2001.

The 57-year-old has said he used alcohol to "try blot out the awful reality" after his arrest on suspicion of murdering French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier but 'it didn't work' and he subsequently attended AA meetings.

His long term partner Jules Thomas has now taken the stand.

The 65-year-old artist has told the jury she was also arrested on suspicion of killing the French film producer.

The court has heard her legal action for false arrest will be heard when Ian Bailey's case concludes.
