A man has been charged in connection with the robbery of a pensioner in Limerick.

Martin Morey (aged 23), appeared before a vacation sitting of Limerick District Court today charged with theft of a wallet containing €80 from a person at the Roxboro Shopping Centre, Limerick.

The victim, aged 85, was robbed of his wallet and cash on July 30.

He had withdrawn cash from an ATM at the shopping centre and was allegedly robbed in a cubicle of a public toilet in the centre.

Detective Garda Mick Dunne told the court that Mr Morey made no reply when charged this morning.

The court heard Mr Morey is in receipt of social welfare and he was granted free legal aid.

Inspector John O'Sullivan told the court the State was objecting to bail.

Solicitor Sarah Ryan said she was reserving her position on bail.

Inspector O'Sullivan said no directions had yet been received from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Judge John King remanded Mr Morey in custody to appear before Limerick District Court on August 12.
