Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a serious road accident on the M9 motorway yesterday evening.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a serious road accident on the M9 motorway yesterday evening.

The incident occurred on the southbound carriage of the M9 motorway between junction 4 (Castledermot, Co Kildare) and junction 5 (Tinryland, Co Carlow) at around 7.30pm.

A male truck driver, aged in his early 40s, stepped out of his cab onto the hard shoulder of the motorway and was struck by a passing car.

The truck driver was airlifted to Tallaght Hospital and is in a serious but stable condition.

The male driver and his female passenger (both aged in their mid-30s) of the car were uninjured.

The road was closed to facilitate a Garda Forensic Collision Examination and has now reopened.

Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone with information to contact Carlow Garda Station 059-9136620, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
