Ireland has officially had the hottest day of the year so far, with 26.1C recorded in the Botanic Gardens in north Dublin yesterday afternoon.

People are making the most of the spell of fine weather by flocking to beaches and waterways across the country.

Met Éireann says top temperatures today are expected to hit around 25C, and there is cloud in many parts with sunny spells. Outbreaks of rain are gradually moving in across the western half of the country, with some heavy thundery bursts

Dublin women Anna and Sandra have been for their first sea swim in more than three decades at Seapoint Beach in south Dublin.

There will be showery rain in places tonight, with a risk of thunder (northwest areas are most at threat).

Tomorrow will start dry in most places, with sunny spells. Showers will develop, some heavy and thundery, but many eastern areas will escape dry.

It will be fresher than in recent days with highest temperatures of 17C to 21C-22C. The highest temperatures will be in the east.
