Micheál Martin refuses to rule out FF-FG coalition

The Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin today refused to rule out going into coalition with Fine Gael after the General Election.

However, Mr Martin insisted his party was in the Election to win it.

Making his remarks at the IFA headquarters in Dublin today, he appeared to leave the door open for a post-Election deal, and indicated that Fianna Fáil had already supported Fine Gael on a number of issues.

"When it came to the needs of the country on the Fiscal Treaty, we supported it. When it came to the abolition of the Seanad, we opposed the Government because we felt it was in the national interest to have proper voices in our democracy," he said.

"And in terms of promissory notes and so on, where we felt it was constructive, we supported government in opposition.

" We've always been constructive in the current Opposition, but we're not contemplating (being in) Opposition next time out."
