Minister Kelly will 'meet us halfway' to tackle homeless crisis

The Environment Minister has committed to helping tackle Dublin's homeless crisis.

Alan Kelly met Dublin City Councillors earlier to discuss homeless services and formulate an action plan.

It's been agreed that upgrading the existing 900 vacant housing units was a priority for social housing.

Sinn Fein’s Daithi Doolan says Minister Kelly made a number of commitments: "He's promised to look at all developments imaginatively and will, to use his words, meet us halfway.

"So what we're now going to do is, in a very short period of time, come back with a number of plans for housing sites.

"We also raised the issue of modular housing to meet the needs of those in emergency accommodation, again there was a commitment from the minister and that's all welcome, once again it must be stated that he made commitments standing not far from here less than twelve months ago, a 20-point-plan, that unfortunately nose-dived through the year.

"We intend to hold him to account on this," Mr Doolan said.
