Cork doctor jailed for sexual assault of teenage patient

A Cork GP has been jailed for two years for the sexual assault of a teenage girl over 25 years ago.

Dr Kevin Mulcahy of Cregane, Lombardstown, Mallow, Co Cork, had denied a single charge of indecently assaulting the then-15-year-old girl on December 23, 1989.

However, a jury of 10 men and two women at Cork Circuit Criminal Court took just 39 minutes to find the 57-year-old guilty of the sole charge of indecently assaulting the woman, who is now aged in her 40s.

The medic had been on a house call to the woman's seriously ill mother at the time.

She herself had a cold and Mulcahy examined her in her bedroom, where the assault took place.

Judge Sean O Donnabhain said Dr Mulcahy had abused the trust placed in him by sexually assaulting her at a time of great vulnerability.
