Protesters descend on Labour conference

A crowd of water charges protesters gathered outside the venue of Labour's annual conference today, accompanied by a heavy garda presence.

Protesters were kept outside the venue, but were able to reach the windows and make themselves heard as delegates inside ate lunch at the restaurant.

Gardaí eventually moved the crowd back from the windows, and the protest proceeded without incident. It's estimated about 500 people were involved.

A small group of protestors also attempted to breach the barriers, despite appeals from the organisers to contain activity to the agreed boundaries. However, the majority quickly retreated.

Former MEP Kathy Sinnott was among the crowd, and gave a speech to the assembled protesters. Dublin City Councillor Brid Smith also spoke.

The protesters had been gathering for some time in Killarney, before marching on the INEC convention centre venue at around lunchtime. It is believed protesters came from several counties, including a contingent from Dublin.

Inside, Ministers hinted at possible future rent controls and paid paternity leave for fathers, while the Minister for Education said she would be pressing ahead with Junior Cycle reform.
