Taylor Swift on Katy Perry: 'Being pitted against each other added tension to our friendship'

Taylor Swift surprised fans with the appearance of fellow pop singer Katy Perry in her latest music video 'You need to Calm Down'.

The pair were rumoured to have a long lasting feud in the music industry, supposedly starting over backing dancers.

Speaking to Jamie Theakson and Amanda Holden on Heart Breakfast Radio, Taylor said it's all behind them now.

"The ending of the video is actually pretty emotional," said Taylor, referring to herself and Katy dressed in a fries and burger outfit, embracing. "Katy Perry is in the video, and she and I had definitely been on very good terms lately but I don't think anyone knew it.

"We were just kind of reconnecting privately and just wanted to make sure that everything was really good with us and a very real thing before we let anyone know that we're not only good, but we're friends again.

"So it was really wonderful to unveil it to the world in a cheeky fun way. But it ends up being pretty emotional when I watch it."

Asked who's idea it was, the country-turned-pop singer explained: "We actually reconnected a while ago. It started when she sent an olive branch, like an actual olive branch to the first day of my Reputation Stadium tour and I was like, that is not only really cool and really sincere with the note, but actually really clever."

Taylor cites that as the pivotal moment in which the two stars returned to being on good terms with each other.

"We ran into each other at a party a while ago and it was literally like in the video seeing each other, but without the food costumes. It was fully sincere. We've grown up enough to realise the fact that us pitted against each other for so long really did add to whatever tension we were feeling in our friendship.

"It's a really positive thing for both of us in our lives."

"In every way i want this album to symbolise growth and things you learn along the way and things i find romantic but that doesn't mean that it's just a love album and everything's a love song but the album is very pure in that it's not in a response to anything."

You Need To Calm Down has over 34.5 million views since its release two days ago and is currently trending number one on YouTube.
