Thursday’s TV tips

Grand Designs (Channel 4, 8pm)

GrandDesigns2015ch4_large.jpg/timg]After 15 years of travelling the length and breadth of Britain (not to mention a few places abroad), Kevin McCloud must have had hundreds of wonderful properties to choose from while making this ’best of’ compilation – in fact, enough to make several series-worth, rather than just one. But it all draws to a close with a handful of jaunts into the countryside, where those attempting to escape the rat race have built their own outstanding properties. Among those to tickle Kevin’s fancy over the years are the people who have pushed the boundaries of design while transforming agricultural and historic buildings, and bringing cutting-edge contemporary ideas to remote places without ruining the landscape they sit in.

New series. The work of North Yorkshire’s specialist road crime team, which uses a network of number-plate recognition to track the movements of burglars, drug dealers and wanted criminals.

A drug dealer absconds from Scarborough court, so the officers get a tip-off to the man's whereabouts and scramble to get themselves in a position to intercept the suspect.

A shoplifting arrest turns nasty when officers come under threat from a suspect who resents being caught, and after detectives identify a van linked to a spate of burglaries, the cops are on a mission to find and arrest the driver. But when they do, he refuses to come quietly.

America’s Got Talent (TV3, 9pm)

Week 3 of America's Got Talent continues the momentous pace of the previous two weeks as Nick, Howie, Heidi, Mel B and Howard scour the country for Season 10's million-dollar act.

Auditions in New York, New Jersey and Los Angeles uncover some jaw-dropping talent, but in an AGT first, for the third week in a row, a single act moved a judge to make the ultimate vote of confidence.

A heartfelt song from Sharon Irving gives the judges the chills and motivates Mel B to hit the Golden Buzzer, sending Sharon all the way to the live shows at Radio City Music Hall!

Prince Philip: The Plot to Make a King (Channel 4, 9pm)

Secret History documentary telling the inside story of the dynastic tensions that were unleased when Princess Elizabeth, the future queen, fell in love with Prince Philip.

It was felt that Philip was rough and ill-mannered – and with the Second World War still fresh in most people’s minds, the royal and political elite disliked his German roots.

But following the death of King George VI in 1952, the establishment feared a dynastic coup,

with the Queen torn between the two sides.

The documentary examines the complexities and frustrations of the royal marriage, as the monarch struggled to reconcile the love of her husband with the suspicions of her family and her government.

The Unbreakables: Life and Love on Disability Campus (BBC3, 9pm)

Insightful documentary following the lives of students at National Star, a college for people with disabilities, many of whom are living away from home for the first time.

New arrival Beth falls for a handsome young man but has to quickly come to terms with his learning disability, which makes him believe he is a retired Premiership footballer.

Elsewhere, the race is on to be elected as the student president, and two room-mates wonder if their friendship will continue after graduation.

Atlantic: The Wildest Ocean on Earth (BBC2, 9pm)

Cillian Murphy narrates a documentary examining the lives of animals and people pitting themselves against the world’s wildest ocean, unveiling the natural forces that underpin life in the Atlantic, from the world’s most powerful currents, ferocious hurricanes and huge chains of undersea volcanoes.

The first episode looks at the influence of the Gulf Stream, with whales, giant turtles and jellyfish riding the current that becomes a migration super-highway, while fishermen battle for survival in mountainous seas as they try to exploit its natural fertility.

The Football Factory (Film4, 10.50pm)

(2004) Nick Love’s incendiary drama pulls few punches in its depiction of the violence and brutality between rival football hooligans.

Torn from the pages of John King’s novel about the notorious Chelsea Headhunters, The Football Factory is a bloody portrait of tribal warfare on the streets of London.

Tommy Johnson (Danny Dyer) is a directionless twentysomething whose sole pleasures in life are drugs and booze with the lads, casual sex, and a punch-up with his fellow Chelsea football fans.

With his best pal Rod, Tommy belongs to a posse led by Billy Bright, who is always spoiling for a fight.

An FA Cup showdown with Millwall sets in motion a chain of events that will change Tommy’s life forever and put him on a collision course with rival fans led by the sadistic Fred...

Fight Club (ITV4, 11.10pm)

(1999) Edward Norton’s insomniac office worker meets Brad Pitt’s devil-may-care freelance soap-seller on a business flight, and when Norton’s apartment explodes a freak accident, they share a beer of solace.

Their blossoming friendship leads them to indulge in a bizarre car park scrap, and before long they establish an illegal, bare-knuckle boxing club in the bar basement where like-minded souls can vent their frustrations.

Dark, disturbing and superbly vivid movie from director David Fincher (Se7en, The Game), packing visual novelty and impressive turns from Pitt and Norton. Helena Bonham Carter and Meat Loaf co-star.
