The best and worst of Dancing with the Stars united in a single show tonight.
At one end of the talent spectrum you had couples like Sinéad O’Carroll and Ryan McShane waltzing off with scores north of 20.
And at the other end you had what can best be described as murder on the dancefloor, otherwise known as Fr Ray Kelly and his long-suffering partner Kylee Vincent.
But the shock of the night, despite Fr Kelly’s performance, was that Glenda Gilson and Robert Rowiński were eliminated despite earning double the number of points the cleric earned.
The look of genuine concern on Fr Kelly’s face turned to one of shock, matching that on Glenda’s face but for different reasons as it was announced she would not be going through to the next round.
Given the outcome, her choice of contemporary ballroom dance to the theme from the Titanic was ironic.
It also allowed Brian Redmond, who does a half-decent poor man's Simon Cowell, the opportunity to quip about how their routine “hit a little iceberg . . . but that can happen" (did you see what he did there???).
Fr Ray will surely now be praying for another miracle for next week’s show as how he has managed to survive this far is fast becoming one of the best-kept secrets of the show.
If tonight’s performance is anything to go by, it clearly isn’t his dancing skills that are keeping him on it.
This time round he did little more than shuffle about during a routine based around the classic 1960 westerner the Magnificent Seven carried entirely by Kylee.
Painfully polite Jennifer Zamparelli greeted him when it was finally over, appearing somewhat stuck for words.
One that finally came out was that she found his performance . . . “unforgettable”.
Ever one for a caustic quip, Brian reminded him there were other famous westerns like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
“Kyle is The Good, and you can work out the rest for yourself,” he told the priest.
He didn’t so much dance as much as he instead appeared, in the words of judge Julian Benson, to be “. . . shuffling buffaloes”.
The best thing that could be said of his performance was that, again according to Julian, he “lights up a dull Sunday night”.
Kyle clearly carried the entire performance and seemed understandably exhausted when the ordeal was over.
Asked how he feels, Fr Ray laughed, saying that he was “climbing” with his best ever score.
Even Brian, when asked later if there were any rotten tomatoes on the show, was upbeat about him.
“Even Fr Ray improved 100% from last week,” he said.
The first hit of the night was former Miss Universe Ireland Gráinne Gallanagh and her partner Kai Widdrington, who brilliantly danced Patrick to her Jennifer when they performed Dirty Dancing.
Due to a shoulder injury, three male dancers ran on to do that lift scene, when Johnny lifts Baby over his shoulders in the iconic movie.
The problem, we were told, was that Kai spent so long rehearsing lifting Gráinne over his head that he ended up injuring his shoulder.
Between them, the couple gave the audience a much-need blast of dancing perfection after the fairly pedestrian opening performances by Brian Dowling and Glenda Gilson.
Despite an equally blistering performance by Sinead O’Carroll and Ryan McShane which earned him 24 points, they were little match for Lottie Ryan.
Herself and Pasquale La Rocca earned themselves 28 points, including the series first ever ten, for their blistering salsa routine.
Moments before the result was read out, Lottie stood on the verge of breaking down in tears as each of the judges heaped praise on her and Pasquale.
Brian dubbed theirs a “blockbuster performance”, and Lorraine Barry said it was “fantastic”.
But the most effusive praise came from Julian who could barely contain himself as he told her it was “box office gold salsa”.
And, explaining the fact that he stood for most of their performance, he added: “I don’t stand for nobody, girl.”
Yet again, Fair City actor Ryan Andrews and Giulia Dotta outdid themselves with a performance that earned them 28 points.
Following on from Billie Eilish’s ‘Bad Guy’ last week when the judges said they were “on fire”, they gave us Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting.
It came fast on the heels of Fr Ray and showed off the couple’s talent, prompting Julian to describe it as “explosive”.
Lorraine described it as “tremendous”, and said the “skill level here was off the charts”, which is more than can be said for the show's most improbable survivor so far.
