Record number of passengers travel through Dublin Airport in January
A record number of passengers travelled through Dublin Aiport last month after what was a bumper year for travel in 2018 at Ireland's busiest airport.
For the first time in its 79-year history for the month of January, passenger numbers surpassed 2 million with 2.1 passengers using the hub, a 5% increase on last year.
Passenger volumes to and from continental Europe grew by 8% with more than 1 million people travelling to and from European locations.
745,000 people travelled on routes between Dublin and the UK, while 211,000 took transatlantic flights to North America. a 14% rise.
Other international traffic, in particular to destinations in the Middle East, North Africa and Asia also increased by 4%, with 85,000 people traversing these routes.
Almost 6,000 passengers travelled on domestic routes last month, a 1% increase year-on-year.
Dublin Airport has flights to almost 200 destinations in 43 countries, operated by 56 airlines.
It is the 11th busiest airport in the EU and will add 21 new routes and services this year to 14 short haul and seven long haul destinations.
Three new airlines will also launch services from the airport in 2019, including TAP, Air Baltic and Sun Express.
Last year saw passenger numbers reach new record highs, with 31.5 million people using the airport in 2018.
