Injured tortoise 'back to his sprightly self' after wheels fitted

A tortoise has had his front legs replaced with wheels.

Septimus the tortoise bedded down in the corner of his owner's garden in Hampshire, on the southern coast of England, and retreated into his shell to hibernate for the winter two years ago but awoke in April last year to find his front feet had been gnawed on by rats, were filled with maggots and needed to be amputated.

The pet is now back on all fours, however as veterinarian Ben Trimmer fitted a set of wheels from a model aeroplane onto the front of Septimus' shell and his owner claims he's now back to his "sprightly and sociable" self.

He said: "He got the hang of moving in it very quickly, although to begin with he was very weak ... Now he can turn himself around and go backwards, something he couldn't do before."
